History of the Asian Winter Games
The Asian Winter Games (AWG) is an international multi-sport event held every four years for members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), featuring various winter sports. The idea of the Games was first proposed by the Japanese Olympic Committee in 1982, which led to the inaugural edition being hosted in Sapporo, Japan, in 1986—a city with experience from hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics.
Initially, only seven OCA member nations participated, but the event has grown significantly. In the 2007 Asian Winter Games in Changchun, 27 out of 45 member nations participated, while the 2017 edition in Sapporo saw all 45 National Olympic Committees sending delegations for the first time in AWG history.
Although Lebanon was considered to host the Games in 2009, the event was ultimately canceled. The 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin will be the latest edition, continuing the tradition of promoting winter sports across Asia.
